US deports convicted criminals to South Sudan

(MENAFN) Eight individuals labeled as “barbaric criminal illegal aliens” by U.S. authorities have been deported to South Sudan, a nation the U.S. State Department warns travelers to avoid due to ongoing violence, crime, and abductions.

According to official statements released on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the removal of the group, which included one South Sudanese national and others originating from Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Each person had been convicted of serious crimes, such as murder, sexual assault, and armed robbery. Most were either near the end of their prison terms or had already completed their sentences.

“These sickos were finally deported to South Sudan on Independence Day,” stated Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, emphasizing that they are “so heinous even their own countries will not accept them.”

The deportation was delayed for a period after a federal judge in Massachusetts temporarily blocked the removals. During that time, the individuals were held at a U.S. military facility in Djibouti. However, the U.S. Supreme Court later authorized the administration of President Donald Trump to proceed with their removal.

Since returning to office in January, President Trump has reintroduced a number of stringent immigration policies, following through on his pledges to undo the “open border” stance he attributes to former President Joe Biden’s administration.

Back in February, the Department of Homeland Security took steps to broaden fast-track deportations to include transfers to third-party nations. This move sparked backlash from immigrant advocacy groups, which responded with a class-action lawsuit on behalf of those being expelled without formal notice or a hearing.

In April, U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy issued a ruling declaring that sending immigrants to countries other than their nation of origin without due legal procedures “unquestionably” infringed upon constitutional rights.
